TYVEK

There isn’t exactly a whole lot to get about Tyvek. They rock pretty damn efficiently. But there’s a high likelihood you know at least a handful of people who won’t get Tyvek. The Detroit band—whose roster is a changing solar system orbiting singer/guitarist Kevin Boyer —is a rare entity, having managed to marry post-punk’s nervy angularity with garage rock’s primitivism.

The band’s self-titled full-length debut, issued in 2009 by the Siltbreeze label, is a wiry and scrappy affair that squeezes 16 tracks into fewer than 35 minutes. At its best, it’s a knotty and edgy listen that pours superhuman energy and conviction into a few chords and Boyer’s strained hollering. “Building Burning (Re-Edit)” is the album’s centerpiece, a fiery rager of fuzzy, trebly guitars and a bassline that prods the song toward unease.

But it’s on 2010 Nothing Fits, released by stalwart garage label In The Red, that Tyvek really finds itself. Fitting the label imprint, it’s a blown-speaker platter, kicking up the distortion and running Boyer’s vocals way into the VU’s extremes. Album opener “4312” wastes no time diving headlong into the record’s frayed, fuzzy frenzy, as Tyvek shoots from the hip and finds its target. Boyer’s limited vocal range is an asset here, kept to brusque declarations steeped in static. When the band does reach beyond the staccato pummels that mark the bulk of Nothing Fits, as it does on the album highlight “Underwater To,” Tyvek’s Midwest garage and punk roots shine. To those people who just aren’t going to get it: Sorry, your loss. —Bryan Reed
