Deaf Spotlight is thrilled to announce Epic Jam VII on August 7, 2014 featuring Patrick Fischer!

The goal of Deaf Spotlight’s Epic Jam is to revitalize the Deaf cultural gathering, where people can share poems and tell stories in American Sign Language (ASL). This is part of a long-time tradition that has passed down from Deaf Clubs and Deaf schools through several generations. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to see, support and develop a larger pool of performers and poets who celebrate ASL. The audience will be encouraged to interact and, in the process, develop an appreciation for why ASL literature is so deeply valued in the Deaf community.

Patrick Fischer, also known as Mr. Shineyhead, will creatively use classifiers and gestures to engage the audience with his innovative storytelling.  His repertoire of experience includes touring with the National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) and performing with Northwest Theatre of the Deaf (NWTD).

Katie Roberts’ return to the stage after twenty years has been a tremendous pleasure. In the past year, she co-starred in Broken Spokes and was honored to be part of the ensemble in Vagina Monologues and Deafhood Monologues. Katie had honed her skills as an ASL teacher, where her students will assert that she is absolutely shameless about acting out scenarios as a teaching tool.  She is thrilled to take this a step further, to combine her performing skills with her skills as a teacher. Her life’s journey took her far away from the stage, but she has always been a fervent supporter of the Deaf performing arts, and it is an honor to host Deaf Spotlight’s Epic Jam.

Consider Epic Jam your “open stage” opportunity to share your poems and stories! Come and join us!
