Foundation for Sex Positive Culture presents: THE CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS OF THIS THING WE CALL SEX
A WORKSHOP, BOOK SIGNING, AND CELEBRATION WITH DAVID STEINBERG

David Steinberg’s long-awaited collection of his writings on sex and gender, This Thing We Call Sex: A Radically Sensible Look at Sex in America, is being published in March. To celebrate, we are hosting a workshop, reading, and book signing with David on Thursday, April 2.

During the workshop David will give his perspective on current topics related to sex and gender, including hysteria and misrepresentation related to sex trafficking; consequences of the tipping point in national attitudes toward same-sex marriage; new strategies in dealing with sexual assaults on college campuses; the right-wing backlash against transgender people; and the ongoing movement for sex worker rights.

During the second hour, David will talk about how This Thing We Call Sex came into being and read a variety of excerpts including stories, poems, and reflections. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase.

For 15 years, David wrote “Comes Naturally,” a monthly column on sex and gender — for Spectator magazine and for an online audience after Spectator folded in 2004. He was also a City Bright blogger for the San Francisco Chronicle, and has written for such other journals as Salon, Playboy, SF Weekly, Boston Phoenix, The Realist, Cupido, The Gay and Lesbian Review, and Transgender Tapestry.

For This Thing We Call Sex, David has re-edited the best and most relevant of his previous writing, and added several previously unpublished  pieces, 40 of his fine art couples photos, and several poems. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes philosophical, unapologetically political, and revealingly personal, This Thing We Call Sex documents the American sexual landscape from teenage sexuality to Viagra, swingers’ parties to erotic spirituality, lap dancing to women’s sexual liberation, fine art sexual photography to pornography, homophobia to BDSM — visiting sexual worlds that include erotic writer Marco Vassi, the Marquis de Sade, 19th-century feminist Victoria Woodhull, erotic photographer Jan Saudek, and porn producer kink.com.  The book calls on readers to question their sexual assumptions and fears, and to embrace sex as an opportunity for intimacy, self-understanding, and psychic adventure.
