Big Band Thing is an 11 piece ensemble created by Seattle drummer / composer Don Berman. The set long piece will be a group of Northwest musicians thanking John Coltrane for all the inspiration and enlightening music he gave to all of us. The performance will feature the same instrumentation that Trane used on his Ascension recording, which that group never performed live. This original Northwest rendering will use original motifs for its ensemble sections that alternate with free form solo sections by each band member. The excellent musicians featured will be tenor saxes, Dick Valentine, Kenny Mandell, and Neil Welch. The alto saxes will be Seth Alexander and Ivan Arteaga. Jim Knodle and Ray Larsen are the trumpets. On piano, Matt McCluskey. Basses Ryan Berg and Abbey Blackwell. Don Berman on drums.
