Weekend One / Program A - Cuidad Interior Dance Company (Mexico) and Khambatta Dance Company (Seattle, WA)
Khambatta Dance Company presents a new creation along with a twist on a recent work. Its latest creation, ENDANGERED SPECIES, inspired by Artistic Director, Cyrus Khambatta's recent international travels reflects on a world in transition. With original costume design by internationally recognized clothing designer Jasmina Panic of Samsara Moda of Belgrade, Serbia, the inertia of the work is drawn from interviews and informal accounts of people's lives all over the planet in transition as the world's cultures, societies and the planetary environment itself transforms. The piece reveals intimate relationships we cling to evolving under the weight of transforming human identities and a world of change around us.
HARMONY 2X4, takes a recent KDC creation (2017) originally set to live orchestral music of Edvard Grieg's Symphonic Dances third movement (performed by LUCO Orchestra) and sets it alongside a contemporary reworking to produce a classical/contemporary counter-reflection. The side by side works contrast in quality and character, but retain the same choreographic vocabulary – only repurposed and recycled to new effect. The impact of the same movement reworked to contemporary music will have you considering the influence of history and its evolution on our collective emotional state.
MERCURIO ROJO (Red Mercury) for Cuidad Interior's five dancers presents the wizardry and technical prowess for which this company is known - one which was born of director Alejandro Chavez's departure from The National Ballet of Mexico. The 26 minute long piece is full of surprises and paints a picture of the human body as a map, where skin, breath and memories intersect at the stories of its characters.
