The devil is in the details when seeking a way to meet the world's energy needs without cooking the planet.

There are no perfect solutions when it comes to addressing the root cause of climate change.  Learn about the choices we face from respected energy experts at this month's Climate Science on Tap. Find out more about clean energy options, their trade-offs, and the road ahead, as efforts build to avoid cooking the planet. Enjoy the food truck, delicious beer, and enlightening discussion around the tables. Doors open at 5:30 pm.

It will take a pragmatic approach to both mitigate climate change and satisfy global energy demands. All sources of power, no matter how seemingly benign, have "ugly trade-offs"*. Picking the best way forward will require open minds, sound science, and clear, careful thinking. Come learn and join the effort to find the best path to clean and equitable energy.

The panelists will provide brief presentations, followed by a lively, moderated discussion, and time for questions from the audience.  The engaging panel of experts will include:

  • James Conca, Ph.D. geochemistry, M.S. planetary science, energy and environment writer
  • John Chandler, M.S. hydropower, environmental and water resources engineering
  • Scott Montgomery, M.S. geoscientist, energy expert and author
  • Nick Touran, Ph.D., nuclear reactor physicist and engineer (Discussion Moderator)

MC: P. Sean McDonald, Ph.D. UW Environmental Studies faculty, researcher in aquatic and fishery sciences.

Come early to get a good seat and enjoy the craft beer, food truck fare, and stimulating conversation!  Doors open at 5:30 pm.

*Vox writer David Roberts has a recent essay where he notes that Reckoning with climate change will demand ugly tradeoffs from environmentalists — and everyone else.  Highly recommended reading for this event and to better appreciate the "ugly tradeoffs" we face with climate change.
