Performance of The Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead.

In the late 60's the Grateful Dead established themselves as the iconic psychedelic band of the San Francisco scene. The first record, eponymously titled and vastly underrated, set the stage for the sound of an era. Anthem of the Sun may be one the great pioneering moments in the development of electronic music, mixing live tapes and studio craziness with Garcia at the helm. This was soon followed by Aoxomoxoa's, (with St. Stephen and China Cat Sunflow) beautiful blend of acid fueled and arcane aesthetics. Finally, Live Dead, set the bar for all live Grateful Dead records to follow, and made Dark Star the template for a million jams in the future of a million bands.

Unexpectedly, what immediately followed were two drop dead gorgeous records focused on beautiful songs, acoustic guitars, pedal steel, and rich background harmonies. Garcia and company went back to their roots in American folk music and created Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. With the possible exception of The Band's "Music from Big Pink" and "The Brown Album", few records have created such an elegant tapestry of a music that decades later would be termed "Americana".

These two evenings present both albums in full, featuring a stellar cast of Seattle musicians who have all found inspiration at some point in their musical life from the music on these records. Each set features one album followed by a few extra "bonus tracks" in honor of the Grateful Dead's own penchant for constantly re-inventing their own material.

With Andy Coe, Paul Moore, Eric Eagle, Andy Stoller, Darren Loucas, Colin Higgins and Wayne Horvitz.
