The team that brings you SHRIEK: A Women of Horror Film Class now brings you SLASH: A Queer Horror Film Class. Discussion leaders and film fantatics Evan J. Peterson and Heather Marie Bartels will lead the group in the viewing and discussion of two classic horror films: SLEEPAWAY CAMP (explicitly queer) and John Carpenter's THE THING (gayer than you probably remember)!

On May 21, join us for SLEEPAWAY CAMP. Without spoiling too much, this film is an unusually subversive low-budget horror film which features queer characters (some stigmatized, some not) and a cast of foul-mouthed minors:

On May 28, we'll reconvene to watch THE THING. With its all-male cast, creeping paranoia, and squishy contagious monsters, the queer subtext is always present. Some consider this to be a thinly-veiled allegory for the AIDS crisis, except that the timing of film's production and release precede AIDS becoming a household term. Prophetic? Check out the tagline: "Man is the warmest place to hide."

Our SLASH classes at Naked City Brewery aren't our only events in May; join us at Crypticon for a special SHRIEK meetup for SLEEPAWAY CAMP on May 7. Naked City Brewery is also screening PSYCHO on May 14th (Mother's Day!), but this isn't an official session of SHRIEK/SLASH. Heather and Evan will be at Evan's book release party at the Unicorn that night.

SLASH, like SHRIEK, is a community class, merging film with education and offering an accessible forum outside of academia. The goal is to offer low-cost opportunities to learn about film and LGBT studies and to inspire more diverse filmmakers to get involved as creators in the genre.

The Naked City screening room is 21+. Food and drinks are available on site. Please do not bring outside food or drink. We reserve the right to refuse admission to anyone under the influence of extreme drugs or drunkenness.

General Admission: $10 per session (register here in advance)

Teachers/Professors, Seniors 65+, Veterans, and Students with ID: $5 per session (register at event)

Low Income Housing / No Housing patrons: free entry

Day-of and point-of-sale registration also welcome!
