ABOUT THE SERIES

In partnership with the Stranger and the Cloud Room, Goodship Higher Education presents intimate conversations with some of our regions most brilliant minds, covering topics from space travel to re-animation to modernist cuisine. Our goal is to present some of the most innovative, mind-bending, revolutionary and extraordinary ideas happening in art, technology, science and philosophy. And we encourage both the audience and speakers to hop “on the Goodship” (aka have previously consumed marijuana). We look at the world through a different lens when high, and we think that it is a fun and enlightening experiment to partner altered states with big ideas.

ABOUT THE LECTURE, THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE: DRUG POLICY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM AS CASE STUDIES IN CHANGING THE WORLD

Just ten years ago, only 36% of Americans supported legalizing marijuana. Now, California, the sixth largest economy in the world, is poised to join the ranks of Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and Uruguay in substituting regulation for prohibition. The prospect of new tax revenue certainly has played a role in shifting American and international attitudes toward cannabis. But an increasing awareness of the criminal justice system's limitations as a tool for addressing social challenges has played an even larger one.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER, ALISON HOLCOMB

Alison Holcomb is a policy advocate and campaign director with the American Civil Liberties Union. She was lead author of Initiative Measure No. 502, legalizing cannabis under Washington state law, and directed the campaign that secured its passage. I-502’s victory has afforded Holcomb multiple opportunities to share experiences, information, and ideas with government officials and civil society advocates across the U.S. and in several countries considering drug policy reforms—including Uruguay, the first country to legalize cannabis.

In 2014, Holcomb joined the staff of the national ACLU to launch and direct its Campaign for Smart Justice, focused on erasing the United States’ disgraceful distinction of leading the world in incarcerating people. This work drew her focus to the South, and she is currently serving as Senior Adviser to Oklahomans for Criminal Justice Reform’s “Yes on 780+781” campaign while also guiding the ACLU of Washington’s efforts to secure legislative repeal of the death penalty.

Holcomb’s prior work has included collaboration on the creation of Seattle and King County’s Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program and the adoption of Washington’s 911 Good Samaritan overdose prevention law. Before joining the ACLU, Holcomb defended the accused in state and federal courts for more than a decade. She received her B.A. from Stanford University and her J.D. from the University of Washington.
