Southern Indian troupe Sapphire Dance Creations Company brings us the first American appearance of classical Indian Chhau dancers sewn into a contemporary work and the artists Never Formerly Known As Anything serve up some chuckles.

Sapphire Dance Creations (Kolkata, India), is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, presenting Ekonama-The Beginning at the End. The work portrays hope within despair and the potential for environmental sustainability, weaving Bengal Purulia Chhau martial art form with contemporary dance in a story of communities uniting for change.

Rachel Lincoln (Seattle, WA) along with the improvisation collective Never Formerly Known as Anything (NFKAA), presents Great Again, a political tryptic that melds humor and horror, precision and spontaneity, and clarity and chaos in a distinct package.

The closing performance Peter & Company (San Francisco) brings us rigorous yet spontaneous work while Marlo Aziz Dance comes back to the festival to present her empassioned dance aesthetic. Peter & Co (San Francisco, CA) blends dynamic contemporary dance alongside the rigors of classical ballet with a spontaneous feel in a duo of contrasting works; Transverse Course, and Space Speaks.

Marlo Ariz Dance (Seattle, WA) and director Marlo Ariz (Martin) are excited to be creating a new work for the 2017 SIDF. Turning a new artistic page, Ariz steps away from her company, badmarmarDANCE, and sets out to create independently with a focus on the investigation and procurement of movement from the most primal, instinctual, and intuitive of beginnings.
