Spawned in the late double-O decade by Calvin Johnson at the Dub Narcotic Studio, the Hive Dwellers a band, a combo (as in combination) of disparate individuals who share a common love of rock’n’roll, library cards and railroad travel. When they emerge from the froth and frumble of their active bicycle-powered lives to make music, the Hive Dwellers emit a pelt of bright, shiny ((NOW)) with a love of pop music underground and it’s more vacuous mainstream distant cousins.

Slashed Tires is the ongoing musical endeavor/alias/band of Seattle based producer Kenneth M. Piekarski. It is music that experiments with beats, textures, and feelings while attempting to create new styles of music subverting subversions. I’ve overheard it described as “TenseWave”.

Award-winning writer and City Arts editor at large Mark Baumgarten is the author of Love Rock Revolution: K Records and the Rise of Independent Music. Woven from the stories of the artists who were there, Love Rock Revolution tells the story of Olympia’s K Records, the underground record label that was started in 1982 by 19-year-old Calvin Johnson and went on to change international pop culture while maintaining its D.I.Y. roots.

The Henry presentation of The Record is organized by Curator Sara Krajewski with generous support from artsFund, 4Culture/ King County Lodging Tax, the Seattle Office of arts & Cultural affairs, and media sponsorship from The Stranger. The Record was organized by the Nasher Museum of art at Duke University and curated by Trevor Schoomaker, Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Curator of Contemporary Art.
