Conditioning and Flexibility for Rope Bottoms

Sat, Feb 24, 2018 at 1pm

This event has passed.

This class focuses on strength, conditioning, and flexibility for bottoms of all fitness levels.

The takate kote is the most commonly used upper body tie in Japanese bondage, but without strong shoulders it can be difficult to sustain, or even be suspended in at all!  In the first half of the class we will focus on strength and stability in the shoulders and arms.  We'll talk about proper alignment and shoulder mechanics, flexibility, as well as things that we can do as bottoms to prevent nerve compression and other injuries.  We'll also look at training for other strenous ties, such as strappados, high hands gote, and the teppo shibari.

In the second half of the class, we'll get bendy!  Instead of just doing passive stretches, however, we'll also train or active flexibility, which will help increase your ability and safety in more challenging suspensions.  Back bends, spinal twists, and splits will be looked at in detail.  At the end there will be some suggestions for rehabbing problem areas

Class format:

We'll start with a short warm up to get our blood moving and loosen up our joints.  The rest of the class will be a combination of lecture, demo, and exercise.  Don't worry, we won't be working out the whole time, but there will be a fair amount!  Also, this class is for everyone.  All of the exercises are designed to be modified from easy to "why would anyone willingly do this to themselves?" and are mostly bodyweight or resistance band training so that you can do everything you learn here without needing to go to the gym.

What to bring/wear:

Clothes that you can move freely in, yoga pants, loose fitting top, etc.  Please bring a yoga mat if possible.  There will be a couple of extras but not enough for the whole class.

We will have resistance bands for everybody that you can take home.

Cost

The class is $40/person, however, we do have low income tickets available. Don't let cost keep you from coming. Please feel free to contact @the_admiral or @agent_99 and let's figure it out.
