The Sparrow is a unique book, often considered science fiction for its inclusion of space travel and encounters with alien species. At its heart, The Sparrow questions what role one community has in the development of another, wrapped in a story much like the real Jesuit missions in our history and early European encounters with the New World. At the start of the tale, a technician at the Aricebo Observatory in Puerto Rico receives a signal from somewhere within Alpha Centauri, and is struck by the signal's odd shape - he renders it to an audible frequency and discovers, remarkably, that it is music from an alien species. He shares this clandestine discovery with a Jesuit priest, Father Emilio Sandoz, and the two quickly, secretly, assemble a team and launch themselves into space to meet these new creatures - or, as Father Sandoz would say, children of God. What happens when they arrive on the planet is incredible, and inspiration for incredible music.
