The Adventures of Basstronaut
An alien fish astronaut, or “basstronaut,” has a spaceship malfunction on her trip to Earth. Landing in the Caribbean Sea, she completes her mission of studying Earth’s sea life, and makes a friend who helps her search for her ship. These puppets are paper doll style against a moving backdrop, or “vertical crankie,” all decorated with colorful pattern collage. The music is a piece by Mozart called Exsultate Jubilate and is sung live in Latin, but no one needs to know Latin to understand the story, in fact it might make more sense if you don’t.
Performance is "busking style" with seating reserved for those unable to stand. Tickets are offered only to control capacity for safety.
Puppet Opera Workshop will follow the event. The workshop is "drop-in" and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Come make collage-style paper puppets to sing your favorite song! This activity is well suited for young kids and for anyone who just wants to spend a few minutes making a simple paper puppet. Perform for your friends and family if you feel brave.
This project was funded in part by a grant from the Renton Municipal Arts Commission.
