After studying anthropology and jazz performance at Harvard University, Berklee College of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music (London, UK) she has emerged in the contemporary jazz scene, working with esteemed artists including Terri Lyne Carrington, Vijay Iyer, Jen Shyu, and Nicole Mitchell, and performing at venues such as SFJazz, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, and the London Jazz Festival.
Making her Seattle performance debut, she is excited to collaborate with former M3 fellowship partner trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel, and drummer Chris Icasiano, to bring a unique blend of original music and arrangements to the Royal Room. "
"Gates is a vibrant bassist with a deep time-feel." – All About Jazz
Robin Holcomb/Peggy Lee - Duets
Peggy Lee and Robin Holcomb have been performing together as a duo and in a variety of other settings for over two decades. This performance celebrates the release on Songlines Records of their first duo record, entitled Reno. Lee and Holcomb recently were featured at Big Ears in Knoxville TN. and the Something Else festival in Hamilton, Canada.
“Robin Holcomb is a true original. Her music goes to the heart, to the bone and touches the soul.” – Meredith Monk
“The music of Peggy Lee is a mystery. The cellist’s melodic offerings are never fully revealed—it’s as if they’re cloaked in shadows—yet they always find the most direct path to the listener’s heart.” – Dave Sumner, daily.bandcamp.com
