Critical Mass Big Band

Seattle jazz fans—and anyone who loves live music—have a special treat to look forward to this fall. On Tuesday, October 27, Critical Mass Big Band brings its celebrated big-band sound to Columbia City for an evening featuring internationally recognized saxophonist Dr. Dave Camwell and acclaimed vocalist Kim Maguire.

Dave Camwell is an internationally recognized jazz saxophonist, educator, and clinician whose performances have taken him throughout North America and Europe. Equally at home on the concert stage and in the jazz club, he has appeared as a featured soloist at major conferences, with the Alabama Jazz Collective, and with jazz bands, orchestras, and wind ensembles. His playing blends a deep respect for the jazz tradition with a modern, highly personal voice, drawing praise for its expressive lyricism, technical command, and inventive improvisation. In addition to an active performance schedule, Dr. Camwell serves as Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at Troy University in Troy, Alabama, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and mentors the next generation of jazz musicians through performance, teaching, and masterclasses.

Kim Maguire has been a professional performer, arranger, educator, director, and producer for the past 30 years. A 2017 Seattle/Kobe Female Jazz Vocalist finalist, Kim is a mainstay of the Seattle vocal jazz scene with a strong foothold in the classical crossover genre. Described as a "stunning singer" with an authentic and charismatic presence, her style is defined by joyful authenticity, highly developed technical skill, and a distinctive, silky-smooth vocal texture. A lifelong musician, she began performing in childhood alongside her mother, a professional classical singer and pianist.

Critical Mass Big Band stands as a cornerstone in the contemporary jazz scene of Seattle. For more than 25 years, this premier jazz ensemble has been captivating audiences with its electrifying performances. The 18-piece ensemble features an impressive lineup of five saxophones, four trombones, five trumpets, piano, guitar, bass, and drums.

The band is known for energy, precision, and swing and delivers big band jazz that never fails to impress. Put all these artists together, and the result promises to be a toe-tapping night that moves easily between powerful ensemble passages, sophisticated vocals, and the spontaneous excitement of jazz improvisation. Whether you're a longtime jazz listener, a big-band devotee, curious about Dr. Camwell's remarkable saxophone virtuosity, a fan of Kim Maguire, or simply looking for something memorable to do in Seattle, this is an opportunity to hear an exceptional collection of musicians in one room.

The Royal Room is located in Columbia City and is easily accessible by Link Light Rail, making this an especially convenient night out for Seattle-area residents.

One night. One stage. Eighteen-piece big-band power, a distinctive Seattle jazz voice, and an internationally acclaimed saxophonist.
