Seattle Rope Studio presents Shibari Dojo
Thu, Jan 19, 2017 at 7pm
Come to our first Shibari Dojo of the new year! We are excited to be sharing our knowledge with you again.
We will be starting the dojo with an emphasis on Bottom lab time, as it is just as important to practice being in rope as it is to tie rope. Then we will transition to our Top focus topic.
Don't worry! There will still be plenty of space for you to work on whatever you've been practicing.
This month's Bottom Focus Topic: Calling Your Timer
If you're unfamiliar, calling your time/r in relation to rope is when a bottom gives their top an estimate of the amount of time they believe they have left in a tie. This can sound like, "I only have about 3 minutes." or "I have 5 minutes left before I need to transition."
Calling your time is like threading a needle. If you call a tie too early, you risk not having your ropey needs met or feeling defeated. If you call a tie too late, you risk causing long-term damage to your body.
An accurate estimate of the time you have left in a tie lets the top know how long they have left to finish and get you untied or transitioned, preventing panic, damage to your body, and the need to cut rope.
We will have stopwatches handy so you can see if that 2 minutes is really 5 or if that 10 minutes is really 8. It is much better to learn your own limits now rather than in the middle of that fully-inverted-circus-contortion-suspension-of-insanity.
We'll have experienced bottoms on hand to talk about what to consider when calling your time and help you process as you work through a tie. We'll be working with ties that go from strenuous to easy in a flash, so you can push through your timer and see how accurate your estimates are.
And TOPS! We didn't forget about you. We'll have experienced tops on hand to talk you through how they do check-ins, what they look for in evaluating sustainability, and how much time it really does take to untie someone.
*Prerequisites:*
Rope tops should have the vague ability to tie a hogtie or an ebi. It doesn't have to be fancy. Here are some great resources to practice these ties before class: Hogtie: https://vimeo.com/196103744 Ebi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipkSnIw1-JA
This month's Top Focus Topic: Hybrid Takate Kote
Many people have trouble sustaining a standard OS takate kote. This can be due to various reasons including trouble with nerves and wrap placement. We will be teaching a different, potentially more sustainable TK that reduces some issues with trouble spots.
This TK, as taught by Kanna, will drastically reduce the pressure on the lower wraps where they cross over the radial nerves. There will be an increase of pressure on the chest. Some people find this preferable to the TK that we tie typically.
*Prerequisite*
Familiarity with the OS takate kote will be very helpful for learning this hybrid tie.
