Artist and impresario DK Pan (The Stranger's Genius Award in Visual Art 2011) is both the reason and inspiration for Café (un)American on NYE. The original Cafe (un)American (2006-7) was a series of speakeasy-themed, underground art events featuring cabaret, burlesque, live music, and games in a participatory, performance environment.

The events were once Seattle’s best kept secret, especially in a city known for shutting down the party at 1:30am. Revelers got a chance to mingle into the wee hours while enjoying a variety show of local acts—from rappers to belly dancers. However, Café (un)American and DK Pan hit the headlines when it was revealed that the Seattle Police Department and FBI had targeted the underground art events in a lengthy (and costly) "domestic terrorism" investigation that swept up DK and others in Seattle. Instead of accepting a plea bargain from King County prosecutors, DK insisted on going to trial in order to make public the overreach of law enforcement and shed light on the misguided investigation. On Dec. 1st, the State dismissed all charges against DK (read more here) While justice was achieved, it was very costly. All proceeds from Café (un)American will help offset DK’s $50,000 legal fees from fighting the criminal investigation. For more information www.statevpan.org

Café (un)American is a return to DK Pan’s métier—collaborative art projects that ask the public to experience a physical space re-imagined by artists. The Bridge Motel, Moore:Inside Out, and the TUBS Memorial Project are all art collaborations that have galvanized the Seattle art scene.
