A mother’s love for her son is the glue that holds this moving family drama together, despite strict social mores and a bigoted father that threaten to tear them apart after Kartik is pressured into coming out. Old traditions still thrive in small-town southern India, and Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code made homosexual acts punishable by law until very recently. Careful direction by award-winner Sridhar Rangayan, an emotionally anchoring performance by Mona Ambegaonkar, and haunting songs by renowned singer Shubha Mudgal are the heart of this story about coming to terms with emotional truths from both the parents’ and child’s perspectives.
