Revitalizing the Deaf cultural gathering, where people can share poems and tell stories in American Sign Language (ASL), is the goal of Deaf Spotlight’s Epic Jam. This is part of a long-time tradition that has passed down from Deaf Clubs and Deaf schools through several generations . Technological and cultural shifts have impacted the way we live and think, causing some values and activities in the Deaf culture to be at risk of endangerment. Consider this as an opportunity to see, support and develop a larger pool of performers and poets who celebrate ASL.

Jeremy Quiroga, the new Handwaves coordinator, will lead Epic Jam into a new direction with his knowledge of executing successful poetry and performance events. The audience will be encouraged to interact and in the process, develop an appreciation for why ASL literature is so deeply valued in the Deaf community. Jeremy, who co-founded the 1997 Seattle-based Deaf Poets Society, is happy to be back, after 10 lost years in Rochester, NY, in the place that he calls home- the great city of Seattle and the ASL poetry stage.

ASL master Terry Dockter will cruise by the Re-Bar to share some stories such as his abstract version of “Time is All Relative”. He is well known for his stellar ability to mold, shape and transform ASL to fit his liking. As a hobby he collects, fixes, and sells vintage cars and motorcycles.

Deaf Spotlight is thrilled to have featured performer Terry Dockter, who will deliver an eye-popping ASL performance along with Jeremy’s dazzling energy inviting audience participation! Consider Epic Jam your “open stage” opportunity to share your poems and stories! Check it out!
