Orlando de Lange, SoundBio Lab and Ada's present The Shamrock's tale: The story of an unlikely St. Patrick's day plant and the role of luck choosing the plants we grow and eat.

Shamrocks are traditionally four-leaved versions of common lawn-weed clover, a member of the bean family. But in America around St. Patricks day stores around the country pass off an entirely unrelated plant, Oxalis triangularis, as a 'Shamrock'. There are over 600 species of Oxalis, all of them adorable, most of them edible, but only a small handful have ever been cultivated on a large scale. Come and learn about the history of the Oxalis 'shamrock' and about the role of chance in selecting the plants that we eat and grow for pleasure.

Arriving in Seattle from the UK, by way of Germany, presenter Orlando de Lange now spends his days researching plant immune systems at the University of Washington.
