Orlando de Lange, SoundBio Lab and Ada's present - Beneath the Mistletoe: The Lesser-Known Botany of Christmas.
The holiday season is a time for family, friends and merriment. But did you know that beneath it all lurks a host of parasitic, poisonous and mutant plants, and that we knowingly bring them into our homes and workplaces? Come and learn more than you ever wanted to know about some holiday favorites such as christmas trees, mistletoe and poinsettias as well as a colorful supporting cast like cranberries, myrrh and the christmas cactus. No prior botanical knowledge necessary, only a festive spirit and lots of holiday cheer.
Speaker: Orlando de Lange, Plant Molecular Biologist at UW and parent to many happy houseplants.
Arriving in Seattle from the UK, by way of Germany, presenter Orlando de Lange now spends his days researching plant immune systems at the University of Washington. By night, weekend, and any other free time he can be found at SoundBio, a community lab space in the University District where he leads a team of intrepid amateur plant scientists (www.sound.bio).
