Sly Stone, an iconoclast of the first degree, created magic as a leader, composer, producer, singer and keyboardist. Often lauded for his funky grooves, what is often ignored is the brilliant writing, the witty and provocative lyrics, and his unbelievable amalgamation of styles from rock to circus to psychedelic to everything in between, all on a bed of fuzz bass and remarkable grooves. Sly’s influences were felt immediately, think Miles Davis or Prince, and have continued to this day. Very few artists have reinvented music in the 20th century the way Sly Stone did, and “Stand” is an iconic classic and testament.
In 1969 Janis Joplin was Bob Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman. Janis had just left Big Brother and The Holding Company and put together her dream band, with a killer rhythm section and great horns.
