Jonah Hieb is a Seattle-based trumpeter, pianist, composer, producer, and poet who blends his background in jazz with more contemporary influences. He developed his love for the art form playing in the jazz bands at Washington Middle School and Garfield High School, but music has since taken him much further than that. The 18-year-old has performed and recorded with jazz legends Sean Jones and Melissa Aldana as a member of Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz, and in 2022, he received a composition award from the YoungArts Foundation. This summer he will return to NYO Jazz, this time touring the country with renowned vocalist Jazzmeia Horn. Jonah was also selected for the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, and will perform there in September under the direction of Gerald Clayton. This fall he will be attending the Manhattan School of Music, where he will study jazz trumpet with Ingrid Jensen.

On July 2 at the Royal Room, Jonah premieres a new suite “The Elements of Inaction” that expands upon his musical background and explores new possibilities of the classic jazz quartet. Its four parts explore the classical elements (air, water, earth, and fire) and incorporate the peace of Taoist ideas, as well as political undertones and the destruction of climate change.
