We lost two giants of modern pianism in 2017. Muhal Richard Abrams, perhaps known as the grandfather of the AACM, mentor to The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis and the generation that followed. Geri Allen’s music was deep and wide- she was an elegant pianist, an early collaborator with Brooklyn’s “M-Base”, and a fine composer who we lost far too early.
